(1,2) Blacksmith.(1) There were MARTINs in Ipswich, Andover, Dover andPortsmouth before 1700, but have not found them to be related to theAmesbury family.(1,2) c.1639: According to a deposition of Robert PIKEin 1695, "George MARTINE came over a servant to Mr. Sam. WINSLEY, aboutthe time of the beginning of the town of Salisbury. then calledColchester, and was no commoner in Salisbury... till he bought JohnCOLE''s first wright... in the year 1643 or thereabout, at the time saidCOLE went to Andover on somer (one summer)." The jury found for the defendant, butthe court "concurred not with the jury." George Martyn gave bond that hiswife Susanna should appear at the next court to answer to the chargeconcerning suspicion of witchcraft. (3) George MARTIN sued WilliamSARGENT, Jr., for slander for saying that "MARTYN''s wife had a child atCapt. WIGGINS and was wringing its neck in Capt WIGGINS'' stable, when aman entered, and she took him by the collar and told him she would be thedeath of him if he told." He sued William SARGENT "for saying his wifewas a witch and he would call her a witch." George also sued ThomasSARGENT for "saying that his son George MARTIN was a bastard and thatRichard MARTIN was Goodwife MARTIN''s imp," (a witch''s familiar). Chargeswere dropped against Thomas SARGENT, William SARGENT Jr. was found guiltyof accusing Susanna of "fornication and infanticide" and George wasawarded ( in what appears to be a public insult) the amount of "a whitewampam peague (colonial currency) or the eigth part of a penny damage" bymagistrates. William SARGENT (Sr?) was acquitted of witchcraft slander,although "the Court did not agree."(3) 1669, Oct: George MARTIN was suedby Christopher BARTLETT because Susanna had called him a liar and athief. The verdict came against George and Susanna. At the same courtsession, their son Richard was "presented by the grand jury at theSalisbury Court, 1669, for abusing his father and throwing him down,taking away his clothes and holding up an axe against him."
