Minnie had a weak heart. She had six children and was quite ill. Mygrandfather wanted to take her on a trip thinking a different altitude orgetting away from the children might help. He might have even been takingher to see some doctors there; my aunts didn''t know for sure the exactpurpose of the trip. She died in Emporia, Kansas on that trip. She wasjust under 31 years old. He brought her back to TX and buried her at thecemetery in Panhandle, TX. I don''t think he ever got over her. He didremarry, and it was a situation of yours, mine, and ours. Nadine and Verdie Haile, sisters to each other and daughters of MinnieVirginia, replaced Minnie''s tombstone when they felt it was necessary sothat their mother''s grave would not be lost. I do not remember for surewhy they felt it was necessary. Possibly the letters could not be readwell any longer or possibly the stone was broken. Nadine told me thatthey replaced it. Minnie Virginia and Burt were married February 20, 1900 in Dozier,Collingsworth County, Texas, in the home of Bettie and Walter DanielFisher. Burt had land in Hutchinson County, and they left after thewedding in a covered wagon to go home. They got caught in a terrible snowstorm and they were delayed getting there. They first lived in a dugout.My aunt Nadine took me out to the ranch (I hadn''t been there since I wasa child), but she could no longer find the location of the old dugout.The ranch house that I remembered as being so large as a child was just amodest home. The boys slept in the basement and the girls shared abedroom upstairs. Nine kids lived in that house; the family later movedto Clarendon so that the children could get an education.
