Salem''s Oldest Resident Dies
Harriet Marden Hanson, believed to be Salem''s olded resident, died Fridayat the age of 107. She was a resident of St. Timothy''s Nursing Home at820 Church St. NE. She was born and grew up on a ranch west of TheDalles. She attended a finishing school in Washington, D.C., where shemajored in art. Her father, John Marden, was an Oregon pioneer, and shelived out her last years surrounded by antiques rich in family and statehistory.
In 1909, she married William E. Hanson, a Spanish-American War veteran.Interviewed on her 100th birthday, she said it was kind of her husband tomove her to Grants Pass, away from the wind in The Dalles. Part of thereason for her long life, she said then, was her early-to-bed,early-to-rise habits--and strong coffee for breakfast. The family movedin 1918 to Salem where William Hanson worked in an abstract and titlecompany. During her years in Salem, she was active in the Daughters ofthe American Revolution.
Survivors include a son, Reed, Salem. Services will be held at 11 a.m.Monday in the first Congregational Church. Interment will be in BelcrestMemorial Park, under the direction of Rigdon-Ransom mortuary.
