AMASA READ, jr. b. 13 Jan. 1757 d. 3 Jan. 1829 at Mansfield. He marriedSARAH SLAFTER 4 Feb 1783. She was born ca 1760 and d. 22 Apr. 1800 andis buried in Gurley Cemetery. Amasa then m. MARY FARLER 24 Nov. 1801.She d. 9 July 1830 and she and Amasa, jr. are buried next to each othr atGurley Cemetery.
Amasa, jr. spent his whole life in Mansfield with the exception of timeaway serving in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted for several shortterms, serving with Col. Zebulon Butler''s 2nd. Connecticut Regt. Itappears he first enlisted in March 1779 and his final discharge was Jan.15, 1780.
Amasa, jr. wrote his will 15 Feb 1821 and left everything, both personaland real estate, to his wife Mary. However, his "beloved daughterPrecinda" was to have use of the north bedroom as long as she remainedunmarried. After Mary''s death his whole estate was divided equallyamongst all his children. The inventory of his estate was taken Jan. 24,1829 and valued at 981 pounds 69 shillings. He too, like his Uncle John(128-7) had an unusually large selection of clothing. Among the itemslisted in the inventory:
Two hats, 1 great coat, 1 pr. Pantaloons, 1 Swansdown vest, 2 woolenvests, 1 black silk hankerchief, 4 Pocket hankerchiefs, 1 pr. blacktrousers, 2 linen shirts, 5 old shirts, 2 flannel shirts, 1 pr. calfskinshoes, 1 pr. black hose, 2 pr. socks, several beds and feathermattresses, 1 "Saloon" bedquit, 1 babies bedquilt, linen sheets, tablecloths and napkins, 16 pillowcases, 1 yoke of oxen, various amounts ofother livestock, 3 pitch forks, 15 bundles of flax, 2 chains, 1 hand saw,1 ton of meadow hay, 7 bottles and jugs, 20 lb. of bacon, 6 lbs. ofsausage, 10 lbs. of butter, 15 oz. of raw silk, 1 tin horn, 5 bowls, 1set blue cups, saucers and creamer, a clock, 2 weavers reeds, 1 loom andapparatus, 2 bushels white beans, 1 fall leaf table, 250 lbs. of pork,over 3 bushels of salt, 1 wash tub, etc.
