JOHN READ b. 4 Aug., 1723 in Windham, CT. m. there 6 Mar 1745 REBECCATURNER. He m. a second time after 1766 to EUNICE. John d. ca 1784 as on6 May 1784, twelve acres of land was set off for Eunice''s use and was herone third dower right. On 29 May 1785 a partition of his land was madefor five of his children. As they are the five youngest children, onewould have to check further to determine whether he made settlements onhis older childre during his lifetime or if they all were deceased beforehim. The inventory of his personal belongings lists many interestingitems:

1 straight bodied coat, 1 blue jacket, 2 great coats, 1 pr. butternutcolor''d breeches and jacket, 1 pr. linen breeches and vest, 1hat, 1 pr. boots, 1 pr. shoes, 1 pair linen stockings, 2 pr. woolenstockings, 2 woolen shirts, 1 white shirt, 1 iron box and heater, 2pewter platters and 4 pewter plates, 1 pint cup, a brass skillet, severalbasins, a sugar box, a half set of tea dishes, 3 glass bottles, a breadtrough, a meal chest, an old chest with drawers, a red chest, 1 sidesaddle, several "runs" of worsted yarn, saddle leather, w old pillions,Snipe bills and Tire, 5 bushels of Indian corn, 4 bushels of potatoes, 4bushels of turnips, a partial barrel of pork, a variety of farm tools andother household items.

John had a larger selection of clothing than is usually found in estateinventories of that time period. The total estate value, person andreal, was 233 pnds. 3 shillings and 11 pence. That does not seemparticularly large but one must think he lived comfortably. He residedin Mansfield, CT. and the births of his children are recorded there.
