During the blizzard of 1888- Pulaski Reed managed to find his way to thebarn to feed his stock, but on his return to the house he lost his wayand would surely have perished had he not wandered into a small tree thathe had planted near his house. From the tree he knew the way to thehouse. The little tree grew big, and in after years he pointed it out tohis grandchildren as the tree that saved his life.
Page 338,339:
The Pulaski Reed family came by train to O’Neill in 1883. Pulaski, bornin Ohio, and Elizabeth Ann Williams, born in Virginia, were married inIllinois in1874. Their first four children were born there. With them toO’Neill came Pulaski’s sister, Martha, and her husband, BenjaminNichelson.
While Pulaski built a two room home and dug a well, the mother andchildren stayed in O’Neill, where another daughter was born two weeksbefore they moved out to the homestead in August. Three more childrenwere born on the homestead. The older children went to school in thePleasant Valley Soddy.
In 1894, when most of his neighbors raised little or nothing, Pulaskiharvested 800 bushels of corn. He was a hard worker and liked to planthis corn early. That year he was lucky and his early plants escaped thelate frosts that came so often to Nebraska in the spring. Consequentlyhis crop had matured beyond the tassel stage when the hot winds began toblow on July 26.
As her neighbors did, Elizabeth administered home remedies when herfamily ailed, and even set and splinted her daughter, Susie’s arm whenshe broke it while coasting down a snowdrift. Both Elizabeth and Pulaskiare buried in the Page Cemetery, but through their Holt Countygrandchildren they continue to influence the community in which theysettled and lived out their lives.
