Mcmurry, William

William McMurry (ca 1725 - 1798) is said to have been of Scots-Irishdescent and was born somewhere in Northern Ireland. There he married aScott-Irish woman named Mary about 1751 and soon thereafter left forVirginia where they settled in that part of old Augusta County thatbecame Botetourt County in November 1769. He was in Augusta County by 28Nov 1751 where there are numerous references to him. He died in BoutetortCounty in 1798 as shown by the appraisal of his estate on 20 November ofthat year.On 28 November 1751, "James and John Scott, William McMurry,James Simpson, James Frame, Robert Montgomerie, James Montgomerie, HughMcDonnal, and William Galespy, to lay off a road from the lowerCowpasture to Burden''s tract." On 15 March 1758 Wm. McMurry went to courtin Augusta County petitioning that John Madison, with a company of men,entered his house on their march to the Shawnees and took some rye." Hispetition was rejected." William McMurry''s name appears along with thoseof James Scott and James Beard on a processioners report of 12 October1765, saying that the property lines of those persons had been found.On 19 November 1766, Wm. McMurry was on a list of men appointed by theAugusta County Court to survey the road from Fort Defiance to Handley''sMill. Later after Botetourt County had been created, the court of thatcounty, on 10 April 1771, "ordered that William Huggard be appointed tosurvey a road in the place of William McMurray who was discharged fromthat office." A month later, on 14 May 1771, the same court, "Orderedthat William McMurray continue overseer of the road her formerly was tillhe puts same in good repair". On 12 November 1779 William McMurray wasa member of a jury in Botetourt County which found for the plaintiff,James Burnsides, in a case of trespassing against Stephen Cork. Damageswere 25 pounds. The same source reports without a date that WilliamMcMurray was paid 33.01 for services provided during the RevolutionaryWar. (Warrant # 67844). On another occasion Wm. McMurray was paid 6 pds.,5 shillings, for provisions provided during the Revolutionary War. In1783 William McMurray was listed in Captain Patrick Frazer''s Company,1783, with 8 horses, 22 cattle, one slave.
