WILLIAM READ, a tailor, came from Batcombe, county of Somerset, in Rev.Joseph Hull''s Company, sailing on or near 20 Mar 1634-35 from Weymouth inDorset. The shipping list calls him 28 years. With him came his wifeSusan, age 29 years, and his daughters Hannah, aged, 3 years, and Susan,aged 1 year.

William Reade, son of the widow Reade of Batcombe, in the County ofSomerset, married at Gillingham, in the County of Dorset, 12 Oct. 1629,Susannah Hayme, daughter of Edward and Joanna Hayme of Gillingham. Hermother, Joanna Montier, the widow, married (1) John Reade of Langham inthe parish of Gillingham. She married (2) Edward Hayme, the father ofSusannah Hayme abovesaid, and (3) Francis Montier, who died about 1622.Susannah (Hayme) Reade died in Boston , 12 Oct 1653, aged about 47 years. William Reade married (2) in Boston, 20 Mar. 1654, Ruth Crooke, theother of ten children. He was made a freeman of Massachusetts BayColony, 2 Sept. 1635, and was chosen a deputy from Weymouth in 1636 and1638. He apparently resided in Weymouth from 1635 to 1647. On 15 May,1647, William Reade and Susanna, his wife, were admitted to the FirstChurch of Boston "upon letters of Dismission from the Church atWeymouth." He resided in "Crooked Lane" (Devonshire Street), in Boston,from 1654 to 1672. He removed to New London, Conn.; and died before 13June, 1679. His widow Ruth married (2), before 7 June, 1681, ____Percy.

WILLIAM READE was elected a "Townsman" (selectman) at Weymouth, 26 Nov1651. (Weymouth Town Records.) As such an office could then be heldonly by those who had taken the freeman''s oath, it is conjectured thatthe first William Reade, who removed to Boston returned to Weymouth for ashort period, and while living in the ancient town was elected"Townsman."

TRANSLATION
In the fifth year of King Charles of England 1629 on the 12th day ofOctober William Read son of Widow Reade of Batcombe, in County Somerset,married Susannah Hayme, daughter of Joanna Montier, widow of Langham.

This immigrant came to Massachusetts with Rev. James Hull''s company in1635 and was the first Reade to found a family in New England. He wasborn about the year 1607 (if we accept the record in the passenger list)but his birthplace and parentage are yet to be found. His father diedbefore 1629, in which year William and his widowed mother are residentsof Batcombe, Somersetshire, England. William Read married first, October12, 1629, at St. Mary''s Gillingham, Dorsetshire, England, Susannah Hayme,born about 1606, daughter of Edward and Joanna Hayme of Gillingham. Hermother, who is named in the marriage record as the widow Joanna Montier,had been married three times: first to John Reade of Langham; second,Hayme; third, to Francis Montier, who died testate about 1622.

William Reade was by occupation a tailor and resided in Batcombe untilhis departure for New England in 1635. The passenger list is datedWaymouth, England, March 29, 1635, and includes "William Read of Batcomb,Taylor in Somerset, aged 28 years; Susan Read his wife, aged 29 years;Hanna Read his daughter, aged 3 years; Susan Read his daughter, aged 1year; Richard Adams his servant, aged 29 years" and about 100 others.The name of the ship in which they came was not mentioned. Theydisembarked at Dorchester, Mass., June 7, 1635, and immediately set outfor Wissagussett (soon after named Weymouth for the English port wherethey had sailed). On September 2, 1635, Rev. Joseph Hull and fourmembers of his church, William Reade, Richard James, John Upham, andRobert Lovell, were made freemen of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay. In1636, William Reade was chosen Deputy for Weymouth to the General Court,a great honor for so young a man, and proof of his popularity andability; he was again elected Deputy for Weymouth in 1638. He was chosenConstable in 1644, and in 1651, though then a non-resident he was chosenone of the "Townsmen" or Selectmen, evidently from a desire to induce himto return to Weymouth.

While the land records for that period are quite imperfect, they showthat William Reade owned more than 50 acres in Weymouth in 1636. He wasgiven 18 acres in the Freeman''s Grant, and in 1637, he bought the houseand 20 acres of land that belonged to Zachery Ricknell of Weymouth;about 1643, he owned the following lots in Weymouth: 18 ½ acres in theEast __ld, 8 ½ acres in the "Wester Neck," with 2 acres of salt marsh,and 12 acres along the Great Lots; in 1644, he bought of Edward Smith 10½ acres in the "Wester Neck." How much of his property he disposed ofbefore he removed to Boston in 1646 is not shown by the land records, buthe did not dispose of his 2-acre swamp lot in Weymouth until November 28,1673.

It is believed that William Reade had at least four children during hisstay in Weymouth, viz, Margaret, William, Esther, and Josiah, though thepresent imperfect records but two. The first of his children recorded inBoston was John Reade, baptized in the First Church, September 27, 1646,"sonne of William Reade, a Recommended Member from the Church inWeymouth." This connection with the Weymouth Church is several timesmentioned in the baptismal records of the Boston Church, the latestoccasion being November 29, 1657, when his son Ephraim Reade wasbaptized. May 15, 1647, William Reade and Susanna, his wife, wereadmitted to membership in the Boston Church "upon ____ (i.e. letters) ofDismission from the Church at Weymouth.

Susanna Hayme, first wife of William Reade, died at Boston, October 12,1653, aged about 47 years. He married second at Boston, March 20, 1654,Ruth Crooke, a woman apparently several years younger than himself, bywhom he had 10 children. On February 16, 1654/5. He purchased of Rev.John Wilson a small lot of land, bounded in the east by Devonshire Street(then called “Crooked Lane”) and on the north by the “street leading tothe Dock,” on which he erected a dwelling house and shop sold by him in1672. His wife went back to England in 1669, soon after the birth of hertenth child, and upon her return four years later, she was brought totrial and banished from the colony for misconduct when abroad. She wasliving in Rhode Island in 1674, as appears by William Reade’s petitionfor her to return, dated September 2 of that year, which was not grantedby the Court.

This is the latest record found of William Reade, the date and place ofwhose death is not known. He probably joined his wife in Rhode Islandand it is known that he died before June 13, 1679, when his son Hezekiahwas placed under guardianship as the following record shows.

“A County Court held at New London, June 13, 1679. The Court havingconsidered of the petition of Hezekiah Read, an orphane under age, & theallegations therein doe Court choose Josiah Read & John Read, his ElderBrothers, to be his guardians who are accepted by the Court & sd orphancommited to their care for his good Education in the feare of God, goodliterature, * some particular calling and the sd orphane desireing to bewith his brother Jno Read during minority to the age of twenty years, theCourt have consented thereunto, he the sd John his brother ingagingbefore the Court to give him good education as before and to teach himthe trade of a weaver according to his best skill & to allow himcompetent and confortable maintenance, meats. Drinks, clothing & othernecessaries Convenient during the sd time and to pay him five poundstoward his setting at the ecpiration of the time with Comby Apparell, hisEldest brother & guardian the sd Josiah Read consenting unto theDispose.”

The term orphane, as used above, did not apparently mean that bothparents of Hezekiah were deceased for on June 7, 1681, “Ruth Percy” wasPlaintiff Contra Jno Read Deffendtt,” in an action of Debt due to her forthe service of her sonn, Hesekiah Read, for the time he was with him tothe value of eighteen pounds. In this action the the Court ordno a nonsuite.

Ruth (Crooke) Read, it appears, married second before the above date aMr. Percy. No later information has come to hand in regard to her or herson Hezekiah.

"BATCOMBE, is a parish in the hundred of Whitstone, in the county ofSomerset, 3 miles East of Evercreech and 3 miles to the North of Brutonand its''acreage is about 3,238; It is situated in a pleasanthillycountry, and commands, from Portway and Walter''s Hill, extensive andbeautiful prospects. Batcombe is a village and civil parish in the Mendip District ofSomerset, England, situated in the steep valley of the River Alham fivemiles south east of Shepton Mallet. The parish has a population of 400(2002 estimate). Batcombe village is at the heart of the parish, whichalso includes the hamlets of Westcombe, Spargrove and Eastcombe(historically Ashcombe).

Batcombe is thought to be been established around the year 660 CEfollowing the Saxon invasion of Great Britain. Both settlements arerecorded in the Domesday Book written after the Norman invasion ofEngland in the year 1066. The Mendip district was, for several centuries,highly dependent on the wool industry, with which these villages werelinked. For along time the Bisse family owned much property in Batcombe,as well as other local villages such including Spargrove. Batcombe has awar memorial dedicated to those who gave their lives in the First WorldWar (The Great War). In 1933 Batcombe village hall was built next to thevillage school. The hall was constructed largely of timber and was builtby local villagers. By the 1990s the hall''s age was beginning toshow,and it was clearly rotting. In the late 1990s plans were begun fora new village hall to replace it. In 2001 the village hall wasdemolished, mainly by local people. Once the site had been cleared (mostof the wood being recycled) the foundations were laid for the new hall.The "Batcombe Jubilee Hall" was completed in May 2002, and was officiallyopened by HRH Prince Charles on the 25 May 2002. The Jubilee Hall ismainly of stone construction, with two sides comprised of externaltimber. In all ,the project cost over UK £500,000. Just like the oldvillage hall, the Jubilee Hall is run by the "Batcombe Village HallTrust", a charitable organisation of volunteers who run the hall.

Ruth who still had family in England, went to visit them in 1669 and whenshe returned in 1673 she was tried in court for adulterous misconduct.The story states she brought back a small child who she tried to say wasadopted but it was not believed. She was banished from the MassachusettsColony so she went to Rhode ISland. On 2 Sept. 1674 William petitionedthe court for permission to allowher to return but it was refused.

William had sold his remaining two acres of swamp land in Weymouth on 28Nov 1673. After the petition of 1674, researchers found no furthermention of this William in Boston or Weymouth. It was then assumed hefollowed his wife to Rhode Island.

How long they stayed in Rhode Island is unknown but Ruth is later foundin Norwich, CT. along with several other family members. A New Londoncourt record proves the family relationships. From this court record itis assumed William died a short time before 13 June 1679. On that dateHezekiah Read chose Josiah and John Read as his guardians, calling themhis elder brothers. Boston records show Hezekiah Read being the son ofWilliam and Ruth (Crooke) Read. Adding other known facts, thisestablishes the identity of John and Josiah as sons of William Read ofWeymouth and Boston and his first wife Susannah Hayme.

The above mentioned court record shows Ruth married again to a Mr. Percy. Nothing further has been found on either of them.
